UPDATE 3/31/20 – Here are some helpful reminders re: filing for unemployment.
UPDATE 3/22/2020 – Due to the recent COVID-19 Stay at Home order issued by Honolulu Mayor Caldwell’s office, we are requesting that you do not come to the Local 5 office to file for Unemployment Insurance starting Monday, 3/23/20.
TEMPORARY UNEMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
Temporary unemployment is filed through the Department of Labor, Unemployment Insurance Division. Qualification will be determined by DLIR.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS:
- You MUST register online at the DLIR website: https://huiclaims.hawaii.gov/#/login. Click “Create Account” under “Claimant Registration” to get started. To get the website link, you can text UNEMPLOYMENT to 877-877.
- Instructions on how to register.
- To register, you MUST have:
- Email address
- Social security number OR green card number (aka permanent resident card number)
- Checking or savings account number and bank routing number
- Registration online is available 24/7.
- DLIR is also taking appointments for over-the-phone applications. To apply for unemployment over the phone, call DLIR at 808-762-5752 between 7:45am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
- File a claim on the DLIR website.
- Instructions on how to file a claim.
- You can only file online during these times:
- Monday through Friday: 6:30am-11:00pm
- Weekends and Holidays: 9:00am-11:00pm
- Answer all the questions. Please remember the following when filling out the form:
- Under “Name,” use your legal name.
- Under “Employment Type”, select “Full-Time”. Everyone should do this unless you work a full-time job elsewhere and this is a true part-time job.
- Reason for Separation: select “Still Employed”
- Under “Is your unemployment the result of Covid-19? Type: Yes.
- In the Eligibility Review Questionnaire, answer “Yes” to question #2 (“Are you available to accept full-time work?”). Type “XXXX” in remaining boxes until question 6..
- Question 6. “Do you expect to obtain work through a Labor Union?” Select Yes.
- After completion, you will receive a confirmation number.
- Call the UNITE HERE Local 5 office with your confirmation number from DLIR: 808-941-2141. Follow instructions from Local 5. The Local 5 office is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.
DLIR is also taking appointments for over-the-phone applications. To apply for unemployment over the phone, call DLIR at 808-762-5752 between 7:45am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
The local unemployment offices on all islands remain closed to walk-in and in-person services indefinitely.

If you have previously registered for unemployment but need to reset your password, you can call DLIR at this phone number: 808-762-5751.
This phone number will be open 7:45am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday.
