Letter: Hotel strikers walk to secure their future

(Honolulu Star-Advertiser) – By Kevin Batey. I read Phil Urquhart’s letter, “Strikers should think about their future” (Star-Advertiser, Nov. 17). Unfortunately he misses the mark by a wide margin. The main reason Unite Here Local 5 is on strike is because workers are thinking about their future, as well as the future of those who will follow after them.

No deal: Hotel worker strike to continue for at least another week

We offered a counter proposal to the company. They wouldn’t respond to our proposal, ended bargaining, and won’t meet with us again until next Monday, November 26.

In a statement sent to Pacific Business News, the union said the wage increase offer was not enough “to make one job enough to live in Hawaii.” “Hawaii’s hotel industry is making record profits, enjoying the nation’s highest revenue figures and driving very high occupancy rates. Meanwhile, Hawaii workers are facing big cost increases for everything from housing to food to gasoline. Wages have not kept up with rising costs,” the union said.
