Tropics server successfully fights erroneous disciplines

Update: Our Kaiser campaign is working. But we’re not done.

UNITE HERE Local 5 has been fighting for three years for a fair contract, including preserving pensions for Kaiser workers. On Friday, June 12, Kaiser sent a letter declaring impasse and implementing a 2% wage increase as of the July 10, 2015 paycheck.

For three years, Kaiser has tried to starve us out. Now they are giving us a little wage increase. But they aren’t giving us the same contract they gave to California Nurses (CNA) and the Partnership Unions (LMP).

Sign the “Fix it First” card. Let Kaiser know: we aren’t second class. We led the fight to keep the pension and we deserve the same settlement as the CNA and the LMP.

Kaiser needs to take care of the patients and workers they already have. No new members for Kaiser until they fix it first.

Update: Kaiser, Fix it First!

Our campaign is working. But we’re not done.

UNITE HERE Local 5 has been fighting for three years to preserve pensions for Kaiser workers. On Thursday, June 4, Kaiser pulled its two-tier pension proposal off the table for the 105,000 workers in the Labor Management Partnership (LMP) unions. In January, Kaiser settled a contract with the California Nurses Association (CNA) that preserves the pension.

Sign the “Fix it First” card. Let Kaiser and the public know: Hawaii isn’t “Little Hawaii” and we aren’t second class. We led the fight to keep the pension and we deserve the same pension settlement as CNA and the LMP.

Kaiser needs to take care of the patients and workers they already have. No new members for Kaiser until they fix it first.

Historic victory for Turtle Bay Resort workers and Hawai’i

2015.05.19 Turtle Bay post-ratification flyerWith 241 voting yes, Turtle Bay Resort workers ratified a new union contract!

For decades, Turtle Bay workers fought for good, local jobs.

It meant fighting for better wages and benefits, since Turtle Bay workers had fallen behind the Waikiki standard.

It meant fighting against the development of condotels, timeshares, and non-union hotels. When we lose full-service hotel rooms, we lose jobs.

It meant fighting against the development with the community. Together, we formed the Defend Oahu Coalition to keep the country country and protect our good, local jobs.

With this new contract, Turtle Bay workers win big.

  • Wages and benefits will be caught up to the Waikiki standard by 2023.
  • We won’t be surrounded by non-union hotels bringing our standard down.
  • And the contract protects against condo conversions, and we can strike over the issue in the future.

That means we now have more job security than any other Local 5 hotel. We have set a new standard for job security.

This is a huge victory for AiKea, which we founded based on the lessons learned from teaming up with the community in our fight at Turtle Bay.

This is a huge victory for Turtle Bay and for all of Hawai‘i.
