UNITE HERE hotel workers across Hawaii and the U.S. have the same message to the hospitality industry: Respect our work! Respect our guests! Together, we are committed to fighting for the future of the hospitality industry that puts the wellbeing of workers and guests first, instead of corporate profits.

40-day Strike at the Hilton Hawaiian Village
On November 4, 2024, workers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village voted to ratify their new contract ending a 40-day strike. On September 24, 2024, over 1,800 workers had walked off the job and began an open-ended strike at Hawai‘i’s largest hotel and world’s largest Hilton resort, the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.
After months of contract negotiations with Hilton, Hyatt, Kyo-ya, and Marriott, hotel workers said their biggest concerns had not been addressed: wages that keep up with inflation and cost of living, proper staffing and fair workloads, and the reversal of COVID-era cuts in guest services and amenities.
During Labor Day weekend, over 5,000 Hawaii hotel workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 5 went on a limited duration 3-day strike in the largest strike of Hawai‘i hotel workers since Local 5’s statewide strike in 1990. Local 5 members joined thousands of other striking UNITE HERE hotel workers in cities across the U.S. like Boston, San Francisco, and San Diego.
Hotels impacted by the strike were: the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the Sheraton Kauai, the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, the Sheraton Waikiki, the Waikiki Beach Marriott, and the Westin Moana Surfrider.
