On January 20, Kahala Hotel workers ratified their new contract and secured the same standard of contract set by Hilton Hawaiian Village strikers. Our rank-n-file Kahala Committee members met weekly for months in preparation, attended city-wide negotiations, joined the Hilton strike line, and led their own property actions that also helped to secure our new contract.
“Winning this new contract would not have been possible without the Hilton strikers taking a stand. It is thanks to them that I can feel more secure in being able to afford my bills every month and not have to constantly worry that my tips aren’t going to be enough.” –Charlotte Murphy, Server, 49 years of service
Since the 40-day strike ended at the Village, nine more Local 5 hotels have won contracts that include the highest wage increases ever, improved severance, commitments to address specific workload and staffing issues that have come out of the pandemic, and more. With even more hotel contracts up for renegotiation in 2025, and smaller properties that we secured Me-Too agreements with, we continue to push for the Hilton standard. ONE UNION! ONE STANDARD!
