Workers at The Modern Honolulu reach tentative agreement

HONOLULU, HI– Last night, nearly 150 workers at The Modern Honolulu represented by UNITE HERE Local 5 (Local 5) reached a tentative agreement on a new contract and secured the “Waikiki Standard” set by Hilton strikers in 2024. Highlights of the agreement include significant wage increases, enhanced job security, and improvements related to workload.

“Workers going on strike for 40 days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village paved the way for hotel workers across Hawai‘i to secure fair wages and better working conditions, including these workers at The Modern Honolulu,” said Gemma Weinstein, President. “Our Union remains committed to achieving this standard for workers at all Local 5 hotel properties who perform the same work and deserve the same level of respect as their peers.”

“We will not accept anything less than the Waikiki Standard and are ready to do whatever it takes to achieve it,” said Bruce Lum, Bellman, Ilikai Hotel. “The cost of living is getting higher every day and we need wages that keep up with that to provide enough for us to provide for our families. We work hard every day to make this company successful and it is only fair that they value us enough to settle a fair contract.”

Over 1,700 workers represented by Local 5 are working without a contract at six Hawai‘i hotel properties including four on O‘ahu (Ilikai Hotel, Hale Koa Hotel, Doubletree by Hilton Alana, and The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu Turtle Bay Resort on O‘ahu) and two on Hawai‘i Island (the Royal Kona Resort and Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa).
