Hilton Hawaiian Village reservation agents fight subcontracting
Susan Keliipio and Nalani Umu, Reservation Agents at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, were placed on call because the Employer claimed that business slowed down. With the help of their Shop Steward Gail Kawaguchi, they argued that reservation calls were being bounced to an outsourced company and therefore their work was being subcontracted. Our contracts don’t allow subcontracting when the work can be done in-house. Susan and Nalani won a combined total of $1,011.01 in back pay. Great work!
Hilton Hawaiian Village employee awarded bar porter position
Hilton Hawaiian Village employee Austin Haynal was denied a bar porter position, which was given to someone from the outside instead. He filed a grievance with the Contract Enforcement Team, which advised Hilton that Austin had completed the bartender course at HARIETT. As a result, Austin was awarded the bar porter position.
Hale Nani workers sent home after calling for more staffing
Hale Nani workers are fighting for more staffing to better care for their kupuna patients. They proudly wore shirts calling for more staffing to work; it is company policy that on every payday is casual dress day. The company recently changed the policy to restrict employees from wearing union shirts. Workers refused to back away from their belief that management cannot discriminate against them wearing union shirts. Management sent home everyone wearing the union shirts. They will return to work with no discipline. Meanwhile, the Union has filed unfair labor practice charges to recover the loss of one day’s pay.

They’ll be back later today (Friday, March 11) from 3:30p-6:00p on Pensacola St. and Wilder Ave. Stand with us for better kupuna care!
