Laundry Attendants win back pay after fighting for seniority rights

Screen Shot 2015-08-14 at 3.55.01 PMKahala Resort laundry attendants Albert Poon and Argel Patricio were not being scheduled according to seniority by their employer. They both filed grievances with the Contract Enforcement Team. Argel won 16 hours of overtime back pay, while Albert won 8 hours of overtime back pay.

Aloha ‘Āina Unity March

11855801_862008163882694_8769429863880083760_nOver 10,000 people marched through Waikiki to stand in unity to protect our ʻāina. AiKea was there, with Kaiser workers and our youth, to stand up for our island and people of Hawai’i. This march is also timely to educate the astronomers in town visiting as the battle over Mauna Kea and other development issues on our islands continue.

Worker Action Coming Up

We have some exciting actions on Maui as Kaiser bids for Maui Memorial—if Kaiser succeeds it would create a healthcare monopoly

Kaiser Mapunapuna Clinic Workers Stand Up For Patient Care!

Kaiser’s Heart Walk Skips a Beat

Walkers in Saturday’s American Heart Walk refreshed with a cup of juice & signed our petition to stop Kaiser’s medical monopoly on Maui. For more information or to sign the petition, visit KaiserDeprives.org.

Workload victory for Moana Surfrider stewards

2015.07.18 Alex Manog Moana Surfrider stewardsAlex Manog, shop steward at the Westin Moana Surfrider, and members of the stewarding department recently led a delegation to the GM and successfully made the case for more hours/staffing. Their efforts, supported by room service, led to short shifts being turned into 8 hour shifts in 2 outlets.

Front services worker fights for her seniority rights

2015.07.14 Jerushua Maiava-Pratt HHVJerushua Maiava-Pratt, a Hilton Hawaiian Village front service worker, was not offered overtime by seniority. The Contract Enforcement Team filed a grievance, and Hilton agreed to pay her $207.73 in back pay.

Aston Waikiki Beach and Hotel Renew workers featured on KNDI radio

2015-07-30 21.07.41MJ Padaca, Lydia Macadangdang, Edmund Legaspi, and Tino Fabro work at Aston Waikiki Beach and Hotel Renew, two not-yet-union hotels.  They were guests on KNDI radio, hosted by Sheraton Waikiki worker Nathaniel Felicitas, where they talked about their fight for a fair process to decide whether to unionize.

Kaiser service clerk awarded higher-grade position after filing grievance

2015.06.30 Jazzmin Aio Kaiser HonJazzmin Aio works in the appointment/receptionist department at Kaiser Honolulu. Kaiser failed to let her know that the position she was applying for was temporary. She filed a grievance with the Contract Enforcement Team, and Kaiser agreed to award her a higher-grade position.

Civil Beat news story on HCC workers, wage theft

Jasmine Marbou GroupHCC workers at the Hilton Hawaiian Village were featured in a Civil Beat news article. These workers were not paid the union wage rate from 2007-2013, totaling over $1.5 million in lost wages. These workers have filed a grievance against HHV with the Contract Enforcement Team.

People Over Profits–Kaiser, Fix It First!

11805768_1098436550170436_245405666_nGroups representing the environment, labor, health, and Native Hawaiian united to protest the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In Maui, where secret TPP negotiations were being held, over 400 people broke the Guinness Records for the largest sounding of the pū (Hawaiian conch shell). Our team educated participants about the dangers of a healthcare monopoly, as Kaiser’s bid on Maui Memorial hospital in pending. The privatization of healthcare on Maui is an example of the TPP on a global scale. Both impact workers and patient health. Housekeepers speak up at MOA

Since Kaiser HQ ordered the use of a new cleaning fluid, many workers & patients are getting sick (nausea, headaches, eye tearing, etc.) Local 5 sent a letter to Kaiser to cease and desist but it refused. Over 13 workers spoke up about the impacts on workers & patients health. Kaiser agreed to stop the use of this product & bargain with the union. We will be setting up a worker committee for bargaining.

Shop Floor Worker Action Wins Big

Since Dec 2014, Kaiser has doubled the workload of workers throughout Kaiser. Honolulu Clinic workers stepped up, filed a grievance and led a delegation to Linda Puu. Over 30 workers achieved this victory. Kaiser has agreed to replace all sick calls for MAs in primary care.

Victory! Week of Kaiser worker actions

IMG_2191 On Oahu, over 200 Local 5 members marched to City Hall to ask the Mayor & other elected leaders to stand with us in saying no new members for Kaiser until they fix it first and address workload & patient care concerns. We received pledges of support from Mayor Kirk Caldwell, City Councilmembers Ron Menor & Joey Manahan, and State Rep. Matt LoPresti.

On the Big Island, Local 5 members delegated Mayor Billy Kenoi, Deputy Managing Director Randy Kurohara, and Councilmembers Maile David & Karen Eoff. Our elected leaders are concerned about the rising cost & declining services in healthcare. City & County officials represent one of the largest workforces in Hawaii, public sector workers.

Elle Cochran Maui Workers (3)On Maui, Local 5 members delegated Councilmember Elle Cochran to inform her that Kaiser’s bid for the Maui Memorial facility could result in a healthcare monopoly on Maui.

In California, Labor leaders delivered 82 letters to Kaiser supporting us. California is Kaiser’s biggest market. CA UNITE HERE unions & AFL-CIO are clear: workers need pensions. UNITE HERE Locals 2, 11 and General President D Taylor are backing up our fight!

Tropics server successfully fights erroneous disciplines

2015.06.22 Audrey Adams HHV server victoryHR misinformed Audrey Adams, a server at Hilton Hawaiian Village’s Tropics, about her rights under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act).  As a result of HR’s error, Audrey received disciplines for excessive absenteeism.  Audrey filed a grievance with the Contract Enforcement Team and got both the verbal and written disciplines expunged.
